Black Women March for Equality in U.S. Protests

The IFPTE Women’s Solidarity Network (WSN) is spotlighting a short, but relevant article entitled 'Treated like crap' - Black women march for equality in U.S. protests. As worldwide protests continue for the Black Lives Matter movement, this article takes a look at Black women and their fight for racial and economic justice in the United States. 

Highlights include:

  • On average, women in the United States are paid 82 cents for every U.S. dollar paid to White men in the United States. But Black women specifically only make 62 cents for every dollar White men earn. 

  • According to US federal data, the April 2020 unemployment rate for Black Americans was 16.7% compared with 14.2% for White Americans.

  • During the pandemic lockdown, 51% of Black women were working as essential workers.

  • Deaths from COVID-19 are disproportionately impacting Black Americans.
