The Society of United Professionals (SUP/IFPTE Local 160) President, Rebecca Caron, and their External Relations Officer, Mike Belmore, traveled to Washington, DC this week to join Secretary-Treasurer, Gay Henson, International Representative, Erin Spencer, and President Matt Biggs at a roundtable discussion hosted by the AFL-CIO on Wednesday.
The event brought together labor and union leaders, including Canadian Labour Congress President, Bea Bruske, and AFL-CIO President, Liz Shuler, to discuss the damaging impact that the Trump Administration’s tariffs will have on Canadian and American workers and the industries they work in. In addition to IFPTE, the meeting was attended by several unions, including the IAMAW, IBEW, and UFCW, among others, whose representatives provided concrete examples of job losses and impacts to industries and military readiness resulting from the ill-advised tariffs.
Premiers Wab Kinew from Manitoba, David Eby from British Columbia, and P.J. Akeeagok from Nunavut, listened and took questions from union representatives in attendance. IFPTE, for its part, has condemned the across-the-board tariffs and is urging Congress to prevent their implementation through a defund in the next government funding bill to be considered by March 14th.
