IFPTE Council of Canadian Locals Meet
The IFPTE Council of Canadian Locals held its semi-annual meeting earlier this week. The hybrid meeting was conducted at the Society of United Professionals (SUP/IFPTE Local 160) office in Toronto. Attendees included IFPTE President Matt Biggs, IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson, WAPSO/IFPTE Local 161 President/Canadian Area Vice President Richard Mahe, WAPSO/IFPTE Local 161 Executive Director Keith Bellamy, Society/IFPTE Local 160 Canadian Area Vice President Michelle Johnston, and IFPTE staffers Brian Kildee, Bill Fitzpatrick, and Anna Liu. Joining virtually was TEAM/IFPTE Local 161 President David Eyjolfson, TEAM/IFPTE Local 161 Executive Director Erin Spencer, Society/IFPTE Local 160 External Relations Officer Mike Belmore, SCMMA/IFPTE Local 222 President Greg Hippe, and SCMMA/IFPTE Local 222 Vice President Jazmin Evers.
The mandate of the Council of Canadian Locals is to foster solidarity among Canadian Locals and represent Canadian interests within IFPTE. The meeting featured reports from the International and respective Locals. Among the major items discussed was the upcoming 61st IFPTE Convention in New Orleans, Local 161’s campaign to keep union represented telecommunications jobs in Winnipeg, building support for the expansion of nuclear energy, and plans for the next IFPTE Manitoba Legislative Conference. The next Council of Canadian Locals meeting is tentatively set for mid-August in Winnipeg.
