IFPTE Honors Black History Month
Tuesday, February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month in Canada and the United States, a time to honor the contributions and sacrifices of Black Canadians and Americans across North America.
In recognition of Black History Month, IFPTE will highlight the extraordinary contributions made by Black workers to the betterment of our collective society, including to our labour movement in each week’s recap throughout the month. One such example are the brave Memphis sanitation workers who went on strike in 1968 to protest the death of two of their coworkers, as well as deplorable working conditions and inhumane treatment by the city’s government. The strike is also famous for being supported by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, who was assassinated while in Memphis to march with the striking workers.
