IFPTE Remembers Omar Latif -- Former Staffer is Remembered for Commitment to Social Justice, Equality, and Organized Labour

WASHINGTON, DC – The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) is sad to report the passing of former, longtime staffer, Omar Latif. Latif passed away peacefully on Tuesday night in Ontario, Canada.
The following IFPTE officers, leaders, and staff who worked closely with Omar offered words of remembrance.
Former IFPTE President Paul Shearon:
“Since his retirement, I’ve enjoyed reading about Omar’s continued activitism in the community. Omar Latif's passion for justice filled his life.”
IFPTE President Matt Biggs:
“Omar was a man who believed in moral justice for all people and was convinced that part of achieving equality in our society was a growing and healthy labor movement. He was a critical part of the IFPTE family, having served IFPTE’s locals in Ontario for many years, as well as being a part of organizing drives, and walking picket lines with our members. We will certainly miss him.”
IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson:
“We know that after retiring from IFPTE that Omar continued his work for social justice, something that is not at all surprising. We at IFPTE are very sad to hear of his passing last night and offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
IFPTE Canadian Area Vice President and SUP-Local 160 President Michelle Johnston:
“While an organizer with the IFPTE, Omar worked out of our office until he retired in 2018. Throughout his long history within the labour movement, he exhibited traits of compassion, determination, resilience, and dedication. He was admired by those who worked with him for his camaraderie, diligence, patience and humour and I know thathe will be missed. I know I will remember him for his passion and soft-spoken nature, and I will cherish those memories.”
IFPTE International Representative Bill Fitzpatrick:
“He was a passionate fighter for social justice and carried on his activism into retirement. He showed great care for his colleagues, and I know he valued being part of the IFPTE family. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his loving partner, Simin, and daughter, Maya.”
