IFPTE Responds to House Rules Package

IFPTE Responds to House Rules Package
Union calls package “draconian” and “unprecedented”

WASHINGTON, DC – The Executive Officers of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) issued the following statement in response to the House’s adoption of a rules package to govern the proceedings and operation of the House of Representatives over the next two years.

IFPTE President Matthew Biggs:
“Make no mistake about it, the House rules package passed today is intended to bring the House floor to a screeching halt on any and all spending measures and deny the good faith efforts of lawmakers from both sides of the aisle from governing.  It is likely that these rules, if allowed to stand, will lead to government shutdowns over the next two years that will have a direct negative impact on working families, not to mention make it nearly impossible to raise the debt limit, putting the good faith and credit of the United States at risk.  IFPTE condemns this unprecedented rules package and will work hard to mitigate and block the damage to working families it is intended to inflict.”

IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson:
“Sadly, Speaker McCarthy has accepted the draconian rules package proposals from the most extreme lawmakers in his caucus whose intention is to stifle the operations of the House of Representatives.  There is no upside for working families in the package passed by the House today, as it will prioritize the fringe ideological wishes of the few at the expense of the many, including hard working families.”

IFPTE is a labor union representing upwards of 90,000 workers in the federal, public, and private sectors.
