Michelle Johnston Declared New Society of United Professionals President
Earlier this week, Michelle Johnston was declared the Society of United Professionals’ (SUP/IFPTE Local 160) new president. Former president Scott Travers announced his retirement last month and an election was triggered shortly after to elect a new president.
Michelle Johnston is the first Métis person and first woman to serve as the Society President. She joined Ontario Hydro in 1987. With almost 35 years in Ontario’s energy sector, Johnston cut her teeth in the labour movement as a picket captain during the Society’s 2005 Hydro One strike. She has served Society members as an elected leader since 2007, most recently as the union’s Secretary-Treasurer. Johnston has also held a number of other roles over the years, including Executive Vice President of Policy, as well as Unit Director for the Hydro One Local.
