PSLF Waiver Ends Oct. 31, Check StudentAid.gov — IFPTE Joins Union Letter Requesting Waiver Period Extension

The October 31 deadline for the Department of Education's waiver on the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) is just days away. The waiver allows PSLF to forgive student loan debt in instances where borrowers were not previously on an eligible repayment plan, did not pay the full amount due, or did not pay on time.

So far over 211,000 state and local employees, federal employees, nonprofit workers, and uniformed service members have applied and had their student debt forgiven. Additionally, close to 1 million borrowers have had their PSLF credits adjusted, allowing them to apply for student debt forgiveness sooner than they would have otherwise.

While the PSLF waiver has helped a significant number of working people, the Student Borrower Protection Center has identified 9 million student borrowers who may be eligible for debt forgiveness.

In light of the fast approaching deadline and the likelihood that millions of borrowers will miss out on the ability to utilize the PSLF waiver period, IFPTE and NPEU/IFPTE Local 70 signed onto a union letter to Education Secretary Cardona organized by the National Education Association. The letter requests the Department of Education extend the deadline for the waiver through July 1, 2023.
