SCMMA Local 222 Makes Gains During Pandemic Bargaining
The Saskatoon Civic Middle Management Association-Local 222 (SCMMA) completed its most recent round of bargaining with the City of Saskatoon. This had been a challenging round of bargaining, not only due to the pandemic, but also in the shadow of a new HR system, Fusion, which caused many workplace disruptions in early 2021. Needless to say, SCMMA President, Jackie Morley is relieved bargaining has concluded and the members will see some gains, in spite of the current economic challenges:
“Our members identified eleven areas of improvement they’d like to see. We were able to make gains on seven of those issues. Temporary positions will now have a specific end date and those members will also have access to family leave benefits. Members taking on temporary positions can have protections in place to return to their previous position. On-call compensation was increased and standardized across the city. Wage increases of 1.75%, 1.6%, 1.6%, 1.95% also give predictability in an uncertain future.”
After three virtual information sessions, Local 222 members approved the tentative agreement on Thursday, July 15. This is the first collective bargaining agreement negotiated by SCMMA as a full affiliate of IFPTE. Local 222 has made significant strides in recent years, and one result of affiliation has been stronger contract language included in this agreement. Many thanks to the bargaining committee members: Jackie Morley, Lana Dodds, Carol Lyons, Roger Bradley, Anna Cole, Kelsey Kowalyk, and IFPTE representative Dave Sauer.
