SUP Letter to Solicitor General: Make Corrections System Safe and Effective During COVID-19
The Society of United Professionals President (SUP/IFPTE Local 160)/IFPTE Canadian Area Vice President Scott Travers, representing 8,000 Ontario workers including upwards of 400 lawyers and legal professionals at Legal Aid Ontario, sent a letter to Ontario Solicitor General Sylvia Jones expressing concern about crowding in provincial detention centers saying it “puts people in custody, employees and the broader public at risk.”
In pointing to a list of recommendations to decrease the spread of COVID-19 among prison populations and those that have a business in prisons, Travers wrote that the “Society of United Professionals-represented lawyers continue to be ready and willing to support the Ministry of the Solicitor General and all stakeholders to facilitate the implementation of these recommendations as well as other steps to create a safe and healthy justice system for all.”
