SUP-Local 160 Weighs In on Provincial and Federal Budgets, Calls for Investments in Pandemic Recovery, Decarbonization and Access to Justice
The Society of United Professionals (SUP), IFPTE Local 160 is pressing the Ontario provincial and federal governments for pandemic recovery, decarbonization of transportation and energy systems, and access to justice measures in their respective budgets. These priorities were outlined in the Society’s budget consultation submission to each government.
The Society’s budget documents call for a minimum of 10 days paid sick leave for all workers in Ontario, both a key public health and labour issue in light of the pandemic. In regards to energy and infrastructure policy the Society is requesting steps and incentives to electrify transportation systems, the development of new publicly-owned and operated nuclear power generation, and public investments in the manufacture of zero-emissions transportation and infrastructure. The Society’s federal and provincial budget submissions also call for restoring cuts to Legal Aid Ontario and ensuring federal funding for legal aid is not misdirected at the provincial level. Lastly, after a year where the public sector workers were among those counted on to provide essential services in the midst of a pandemic, the Society requests reversing the Ontario’s Bill 124 which caps wage increases for unionized public sector workers at 1%.
