SUP Recognizes Orange Shirt Day
The Society of United Professionals (SUP/IFPTE Local 160) is proud to participate in Orange Shirt Day.
Every September 30, communities and organizations all over Canada participate in Orange Shirt Day. Established in 2013, Orange Shirt Day was created to educate people and promote awareness in Canada about the Indian residential school system and the impact it has had on Indigenous communities for over a century.
Indigenous children who were removed from their families and sent to residential schools where many became victims of physical, sexual, mental and emotional abuse and torture. The devastation of cultural genocide and the impact that continues today should never be forgotten. We must confront the horror of the residential school system, the toll it has taken on Indigenous people and the damage they continue to cause as we move towards reconciliation.
