CCPA Manitoba Honour for Former CUPE President Paul Moist
On Sunday, November 7th, 2021, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) will be hosting its annual fundraising brunch for the Errol Black Chair in Labour Issues in Winnipeg, MB. The brunch is an annual gathering of labour activists and leaders, elected officials, academics, and community members, to honour a longtime supporter of the labour movement in Manitoba.
The Chair is named after former university professor, union activist, and Brandon, Manitoba City Councillor Errol Black and was established in 2011. Brother Black passed away in 2012 after a short struggle with ALS. Manitoba is proud to have two of our own being the highlights of the brunch. Current CLC President Beatrice Bruske will be the 2021 Keynote Speaker and the 2021 Honoree is former Canadian Union of Public Employees President Paul Moist.
“There are two reasons why I’m humbled by this honour. The first is Errol himself. Brother Black was first and foremost a rank and file unionist. He was active in his union, in his labour council, in his community and as an elected City Councillor. The second is who else has been the Honoree before me. People like Prof. John Loxley, community activist Shirley Lord, and former MLA and MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis. I’m truly standing on the shoulders of giants.” Said brother Moist.
The CCPA in Manitoba in one of Canada’s most active branches offices. Through annual contributions and attendance at the brunch, the CCPA receives the full support of TEAM Local 161 and WAPSO Local 162. Sister Beatrice Bruske, said it best when asked about why the CCPA is important: “We can say all we want at the bargaining table and in the media. If we don’t have the facts to back it up, we don’t win the argument.”
