Society of United Professionals/IFPTE Local 160 Hosts Labour Tour of The Bruce Nuclear Generating Station

This week Society of United Professionals (SUP)/Local 160 leaders brought together government officials, SUP union members, and leaders from the larger Canadian labour movement to tour the world’s largest nuclear power plant, the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station located in Ontario, Canada.  The labour delegation included included Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) President Bea Bruske and Ontario Labour Federation (OFL) President Patty Coates.

The two day event, in which all participants were required to be fully vaccinated, also included a dinner in which participants heard from SUP/Local 160 president and IFPTE Canadian Area Vice President Michelle Johnston, CLC President Bruske, OLF President Coates, IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson, IFPTE President Matt Biggs, and Bruce President and CEO Mike Rencheck.

Johnston commented that, “It is an honour for the Society to be able to sponsor and organize this tour, something that very few people will ever have a chance to experience.  We view this as an opportunity for our government officials and our Sisters and Brothers in the larger labour community to see first hand the clean, reliable and safe production of nuclear power, and industry that provides tens of thousands of good paying, union represented jobs.  We appreciate those who attended, and the team at Bruce Power for helping to make this a productive learning experience.”

As one attendee expressed, “Thanks to you and the Society Team for a great event. I still have a hard time believing you got that incredible group of participants together for a tour of a nuclear facility. It was unprecedented.”
