IFPTE Attends Summer AFL-CIO Executive Council Meetings

IFPTE President Matt Biggs and Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson attended this week’s AFL-CIO Executive Council meetings in Washington, D.C.  The Executive Council, of which IFPTE is a member, is the governing body of the AFL-CIO and meets biannually, focused on the major issues impacting America’s workers.

Among the highlights of the meetings was a resolution passed expressing the American labor movement’s solidarity with the striking Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) workers, and a discussion about labor’s participation in the 60th anniversary of the historic March on Washington.

Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su and senior White House officials also addressed the Council.  President Biggs noted that, “this week’s AFL-CIO meetings were productive, and were laser-focused on the work all of us in labor have to do to continue to grow this nation’s labor density through organizing.  The more labor density we have, the more leverage we have to put in place laws and policies that benefit working families, not corporate interest.”

Secretary-Treasurer Henson also commented that, “we at IFPTE were pleased to have an opportunity to connect and coordinate on issues of mutual importance with several other unions, particularly when it comes to ensuring the federal government investments in such things as clean energy technologies and semiconductors result in domestic workforce development and increased union membership in these key industries.’  Also in attendance were IFPTE Executive Assistant to the Executive officers Brian Kildee.
