IFPTE Mourns the Loss of Longtime Local 202 General Chairman, Brother Wayne Mattice
“Wayne put his Family and his Union above all else”
WASHINGTON, DC – The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), representing 90,000 workers across North America, is sad to announce the passing of our Union Brother, Wayne Mattice, who led Local 202 for over two decades.
IFPTE international representative, David LaFemina, who worked closely with Wayne for over two decades, commented on his passing:
“Wayne spent his entire career with the Boston Maine/Pan Am Railways as a Flagger Inspector and was General Chairman of IFPTE Local 202 from 2001-2009. Despite his retirement from the railroad, he nonetheless maintained his Local 202 membership, prompting the members to request that he continue to lead the Local as General Chairman, which he enthusiastically agreed to. After all, Wayne put his Family and his Union above all else.
“As General Chairman he was involved in all the contract negotiations, grievance filings, and hearings and recently represented the local during the sale of Pan Am to CSX Railroad. While the last couple of years have been tough on Wayne, he never wavered in his support and advocacy for the members. In the summer of 2024 Wayne reluctantly resigned as General Chairman due to his declining health.
“Wayne’s nickname was Grizzley, yet anyone who met him would tell you he was the kindest, gentlest person who enjoyed life. In recent years, Wayne created memorable destination vacations for his family and looked forward to spending the summer at his cousin’s cottage eating lobster on the beach.
What we will miss most of all is Wayne’s Saturday morning calls at 7am giving updates on his friends at the diner, the “goings on”, as Wayne called it, with his grandchildren, and his important grocery list for The Marketbasket. He was just an all-around great guy, and as good of a Trade Unionist as there is. I will really miss him.”
Brother Wayne Mattice passed away on November 12th. A memorial will be held on December 1st at his Epson, New Hampshire home. The family requests anyone interested to contribute to their favorite charity in his memory.
RIP Brother Wayne Mattice!
