President-Elect Trump Nominates Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer for Labor Secretary
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
IFPTE says that Chavez-DeRemer “established herself as a top supporter of Unions and Workers while in Congress”
WASHINGTON, DC – The executive officers of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), representing 90,000 workers across North America, responded to today’s announcement by President-Elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the Department of Labor.
IFPTE International President Matt Biggs:
“IFPTE applauds the nomination of Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer for Secretary of Labor. As a freshman Republican in Congress, she established herself as a supporter of unions and workers across the private, public, and federal sectors. She is a cosponsor of Labor’s two most important pieces of legislation – the Protection Right to Organize (PRO) Act for private sector workers, and the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act, which provides State and Local government workers across the country the right to organize and negotiate collectively. While we at IFPTE remain concerned about the anti-public federal employee rhetoric coming from the Trump transition, we are pleased with this nomination of Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer to the Department of Labor.”
IFPTE Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson:
“IFPTE has worked with Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer throughout the 118th Congress on such issues as supporting legislation to protect the federal civilian service from politicization, including from Schedule F, and to bring back fairness for workers who want to organize unions in their workplaces. She has a record of supporting workers in all sectors of our economy, including government and private sector alike. DOL has so many roles that are vital to American workers, from enforcing wage and overtime laws, to investigating and supporting health and safety in the workplace, to making sure displaced workers have the support they need to get back in the workforce and expanding high-quality training and apprenticeship programs to all workers. We at IFPTE are hopeful that she will bring that strong, pro-union, pro-worker track record with her to DOL and strengthen the important mission of this agency.”
IFPTE Legislative Director Faraz Khan:
“Representative Chavez-DeRemer is one of only a handful of House Republicans who voted to stop legislative efforts to attack official time for federal unions and defund OPM’s regulations against Schedule F, and she was one of the friendly Republicans that IFPTE and other federal unions turned to when we were facing a government shutdown in September 2023. Her record on Labor legislation and votes speaks for itself, which is why IFPTE has been proud to work with her and her staff.”
Across the United States and Canada, IFPTE represents 90,000 highly skilled workers in the federal, public, and private sectors. IFPTE is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO and the Canadian Labour Congress.
