IFPTE Warns House Agriculture Committee that Farm Authorization Bill Will Harm Food Security for Working People, Children, Military Families, Veterans, and Seniors
Before the House Agriculture Committee began an all-day markup of the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024, IFPTE urged Members of the Committee to oppose the legislation as includes cuts to nutrition programs that the most vulnerable working Americans and their families count on.
The $30 billion cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is estimated to reduce food benefits to “7 million children, including 5 million under age five, and 6 million seniors.” IFPTE’s letter also notes that the underfunding of food nutrition “could force state governments to cut existing essential public services to make up for the cuts to these federally funded food service programs.” The bill also allows states to outsource and privatize government services that support working
The House Agriculture Committee advanced the bill after several hours of debate over amendments and the impact to underpaid working people who could on SNAP benefits and other nutrition benefits to make sure there is food on the table for their family. IFPTE joins the labor movement in making sure any farm reauthorization bill with these harmful provisions is not enacted.
