IFPTE’s Women’s Solidarity Network (WSN) Event Recognizes Disability Employment Awareness Month
Earlier this week, the IFPTE Women’s Solidarity Network (WSN) held an event recognizing Disability Employment Awareness Month which takes place every October to acknowledge and promote the contributions and inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace. This online event was WSN’s 9th Women and Unions International Speakers Series, pulling together a panel of experts at the forefront of disability rights advocacy. Speakers included:
Hayley Brown, President of the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU/IFPTE Local 70) and a Research Associate at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR)
Brianne Burger, Communications Director of Deaf In Government (DIG) and Director/Liaison of the Special Institutions within the U.S. Department of Education
Jess Miller-Suchet, Former member of the Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC/IFPTE Local 20) and Paralegal at Disability Rights Advocates
The discussion was moderated by Judith Logan Junop from the Society of United Professionals (SUP/IFPTE Local 160). Participants learned about various forms of disabilities, including the difference between visible and invisible disabilities, and the spectrum of challenges that individuals can experience based on the type of disability as well as intersectional identity which can further exacerbate marginalization.
Panelists also highlighted the need to reframe conversations about workplace accommodations towards embracing universal design principles that can benefit everyone generally, but may be crucial to the disabled such as workplace policies that promote flexible work arrangements. Speakers went on to discuss the important role that unions have played in advancing the social and economic status of people with disabilities, including the necessary work that remains ahead.
IFPTE extends a sincere thank you to the panelists and moderator for an enriching conversation. If you missed the event, you can watch the recording here. Closed captioned recording also available, please contact us for details at womensnetwork@ifpte.org.
