In Day of Mourning Message, Mahe Says 'Workplace Safety Affects Everyone'

On April 28th, WAPSO/IFPTE Local 162 president Richard Mahe gave a heartfelt video message to members of the local and community. In previous years, President Mahe and other civic union leaders attended a sunrise memorial service at Winnipeg’s City Hall, complete with lowering the flags to half-mast. The COVID-19 pandemic made this year’s service impossible to perform, and many leaders took to the internet to express condolences and rally support for safer workplaces. Mahe took a moment to acknowledge the passing of a worker at Winnipeg’s Water and Waste Treatment Centre in 2018 and the continued impact the death has on the community.

The COVID-19 has also presented a new and very real threat to the health and safety of WAPSO members.

“Today’s Day of Mourning has taken on added meaning as we recognize the job that all workers on the front line are doing to ensure our communities, our cities, and the country continue to receive essential public services.

"Right now the world is grappling with a global pandemic and it is vital that we take a moment today to reinforce the importance of ensuring all workers have the necessary protective equipment to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.

"Workplace safety is a broad issue that affects everyone."
