Senate Begins Consideration of NDAA Amendments, IFPTE Urges Support for Veterans, American Manufacturing, Navy Shipyards, Supply Chains
This week, IFPTE shared the union’s list of endorsed amendments to the Senate National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2022.
IFPTE’s letter asked Senators to support a number of amendments including ones that would accelerate the Navy shipyards infrastructure repair and modernization plan, ensure that government funding for domestic supply chains and advanced manufacturing carries strong labor standards and worker rights, help Veterans and service members suffering from exposure to burn pits, increase domestic content requirements for defense procurement, and extend whistleblower protections to government contractors.
IFPTE’s letter also urged Senators to oppose amendments that weaken the federal civil service’s competitive hiring and merit protections, oppose an amendment to allow the Navy to use overseas shipyards to build Navy ships, and oppose an amendment that would repeal of President Biden’s executive orders on vaccinations for federal workers and contractors.
The Senate passed a motion to begin consideration of amendments to the NDAA on Thursday, though debate and consideration of those amendments is expected to begin on the week of November 29. after the Senate returns from the Thanksgiving recess.
As the Senate NDAA moves forward, IFPTE will continue to engage with Senators to ensure IFPTE members’ priorities are incorporated into the bill. Once the Senate passes the NDAA and the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill begin to be reconciled in a conference committee, IFPTE will work with conferees to preserve key wins in the House-passed NDAA.
