Society of United Professionals Joins Toronto’s International Women’s Day Rally

The Society of United Professionals/IFPTE Local 160 proudly took to the streets in Toronto on Saturday, March 8, to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and stand in solidarity with those fighting for gender equality and social justice. As an event sponsor, the Society reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for women’s rights and standing in solidarity with marginalized communities fighting for a better future.

For the 47th year, Toronto’s IWD rally united thousands under the theme “Fighting for Our Lives. Building Our Resistance.” The march highlighted pressing issues, including the cost of living crisis, the rise of the right, and struggles against colonialism affecting Indigenous, Sudanese, and Palestinian peoples.

Speakers from across movements shared powerful messages on the challenges facing marginalized communities and the urgent need for action. A special tribute honored Indigenous Elder Ursala Jacko, a pioneering IWD organizer and champion in the fight against the coerced sterilization of Indigenous women.

Organized by a coalition of community groups, students, and unions, and sponsored by Women Working with Immigrant Women, Toronto’s IWD rally is a longstanding tradition. Since 1978, it has remained the only annual IWD rally in North America, bringing together thousands to demand justice, equity, and systemic change.
