SOLIDARITY ALERT: As Union Vote Nears, Secretary-Treasurer Henson Speaks to Volkswagen Workers in Tennessee
Secretary-Treasurer Henson visited with Volkswagen (VW) workers in Tennessee on Sunday as the April 17th vote to unionize with the United Auto Workers (UAW) quickly approaches.
Henson, who spoke to workers as a part of a weekend of meetings and events sponsored by the UAW and Jobs With Justice (JWJ), commented that, “As a proud union officer from IFPTE and a former longtime president of the EA/IFPTE Local 1937, as well as a native Tennessean from Chattanooga where the Volkswagen plant is located, I felt it important to lend my voice and support to these workers who are seeking to organize their union. Sadly there are politicians here locally and at the state level, including our governor and county mayor who are unjustly encouraging these workers to vote against the union, and doing so by spreading misinformation about the benefits that come with a union card. My message to these workers was to block out the anti-union politicians who are trying to scare you into voting ‘no’, while doing their own research into the strong wages, benefits, pensions, and respect on the job that comes with a union card. IFPTE and the entire labor movement stands in Solidarity with them, and I was proud to send along that message.”
Henson will be out rallying with the UAW, JWJ, and the VW workers again this weekend. The unionization vote is scheduled for April 17th through the 19th. Learn more about the UAW organizing drive here.
