The Society/IFPTE Local 160 and IFPTE Leadership Join Canadian and U.S. Energy Officials at Canadian Embassy
The Society of United Professionals/IFPTE Local 160 President and Canadian Area Vice President Michelle Johnston and External Relations Director Mike Belmore were in Washington, D.C. this week, to attend attended an event at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC on Tuesday. They were joined by IFPTE President Matt Biggs and Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson for the Canadian and U.S. governments’ announcement and signing of a statement of intent on managing used nuclear fuel.
The historic joint agreement between Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and the U.S. Department of Energy established a formal partnership for the two nations to work hand in hand in sharing best practices and science and technology findings pertaining to the long term storage of used nuclear fuel.
IFPTE and the Society have been working together within the IFPTE family to promote robust government investments in clean energy technologies, including nuclear energy.
Michelle Johnston commented that, “this was not only a great day for both Canada and United States, but also a huge step forward toward our two nations reaching our goal of attaining net zero emissions by 2050. The Society and IFPTE are honoured to have been invited to attend this historic signing ceremony and will continue our work with lawmakers to continue to invest in these critically important technologies.”
