Union Busting Update: Senators Reed, Peters Lead Sign-on Letter to Secretary Esper
Senate Armed Services Committee Ranking Member, Senator Jack Reed (RI), and Homeland Security and Government Affairs Ranking Member, Senator Gary Peters (MI), led a letter this week to Defense Secretary Esper in response to the Trump Administration’s efforts for the wholesale elimination of collective bargaining for DOD’s more than 700,000 civilian workers, writing that, “We strongly discourage you from taking steps to eliminate the statutorily-granted collective bargaining rights of DOD civilians.” The letter, which was signed by all 47 Senate Democratic Senators, also stated that the Administration’s interest in eliminating collective bargaining rights “represents a dangerous precedent in suggesting that those rights somehow compromise our national security.”
